Right when one of the boards splinter, the cloaked figures on either end of the alcove grab and flip the boards, allowing the other 3 towards the center to quickly step out and stab the rats. The rats are bewildered by the quick turn of events and are unable to react immediately. 2 of the cloaked figures strike true, stabbing the rats in the head while the one in the center misses slightly.

Nikkolai jumps up and into the fray, smashing the closest rat he can see, splattering its guts everywhere. Meanwhile Jose deftly makes two strikes with his dagger, striking two rats right through their mouths, instantly killing them.
The other 4 rats begin charging the 2 cloaked figures that are holding the boards.

Jose stomps right on a rat charging towards the left, feeling the rat's bones dislocate and break under the force of his foot. He then assumes a running position as he prepares to dart over to the right side.
Meanwhile the three cloaked figures run back to aid their board wielding compatriots while the board bros drop their boards and assume defensive stances, getting ready to throw the rats off should the latch on.

Jose kicks one of the rats onto the opposing wall. It makes a small squeak as it hit the wall and falls to the ground, dead. The final two rat leap up at the unarmed cloaked figures, but they are able to redirect the attack and fling those rats against the opposing wall as well, killing the last of the vermin.

"Man, these monsters always come at this portion of the path. We should really just get rid of them once and for all."
"Don't underestimate them, they're weak in small groups, but a swarm of these vermin can spell our doom."
"It's not worth it, we've sent an expedition group to take care of the issue and they ended up dying."
"The only reason why they died is because only 2 people went, with this many people, we should be able to take care of it."
"There's no point, we should just hurry and get to the end of the path already."
"And what? Leave this threat for the next group to deal with?"

The cloaked figures continue to argue and bicker about what they should do.

Sorry for the big delay again, guys.

One of the cloaked figures gives Jose some finger guns. While another grabs one of the torches off the walls.
"That guy know's what I'm say'n."
"Ugh, alright. Lets go then."

You follow the cloaked figures through a side tunnel that's not lit at all. that was blocked off by some boards similarly to the alcove you hid in earlier. As you venture further down the side tunnel, you notice a few decaying corpses as well as some spears, daggers, and shields that they have equipped.

You continue on, and the tunnel looks less and less man-made, instead it seems to look more like a giant tunnel made by mole-rats or gophers. The air also begins to smell more sulfurous and the light from the torch seems to illluminate less and less.

As you continue deeper into the unknown, you notice several geysers that are spewing gas from their cracks. However, some sort of magic seems to be allowing the gas to mostly be shifted back into the earth, leaving only small amounts in the air.

As you continue walking, you seem to enter into an area, where judging by the echoes from your footsteps, is a large open area. Though it is difficult to see everything, you are able to see about 15 feet around you. The room has many geysers of gas in it. two, you can see (one about 10 feet in front of you and another about 15 feet on the left) while you are able to hear the gas spewing from several others farther in.

Suddenly you hear the familiar pitter patter of the rat horde's footsteps approaching you from directly in front of you. Judging by the volume of the footsteps, you might estimate them to be 40 feet away.

The geyser in front of you erupts into flame, knocking loose the makeshift spike trap as you feel the force of the explosion blow against you; though you are all able to stand your ground.
The rats continue approaching and you no longer have access to the torch, which miraculously survived the explosion and sits about 5 feet past the geyser you threw it at.

You are all now in the exact same situation as earlier, before the torch was thrown into the geyser. The only difference is that the rats are now in your vision and 15 feet away.

Several of the cloaked figures begin preparing to jump away to the side so as to dodge the horde of rats while the two closes to you are holding their daggers up, prepared to fight.

Jose tosses the torch into the geyser, causing another explosion, immediately following up by running and jumping into the explosion. The cloaked figures and Nikolai stand their ground, finishing up the rest of the rats while several are squished under the force of Jose's body.
As this all happens, the rats shriek in pain.
"Hey, this isn't too much to deal with. Why did those guys at the front die? Also why did they die over there? instead of in here?"

From deeper in the tunnel you hear a roar.

Meanwhile, galloping thuds echo through the caverns as a huge rat beast towering almost to the height of the cavern bounds into view, ignoring the motionless cloaked figures and towards the two runners.

Just as the beast passes by, Nikolai prepares and launches a DIVEKICKuh straight at the beast's head. Your foot contacts the fleshy cheek of the beast, which gradually seems to harden until it is the same hardness as metal, resulting an a loud clank. The recoils and screeches out at you in anguish and anger.
You hear the shuffling of footsteps from the general direction of your cloaked compatriots.
"That tunnel is a deathtrap with that giant thing. It doesn't seem like we have any choice other than to fight it in this open area."
Meanwhile, Jose continues running away down the hall.
