Play with the volume up
and when you're done
go read the stuff on the very very bottom of the screen
like second to last line.

the controls are difficult, pretty music though, I'd like to hear the more of the band that did it.

Re: Kevin Harrison's Flash Game
Did you read the thing at the bottom like you were instructed to?
For those of you that were too lazy, I will explain:
I wrote the music, using the Sibelius notation program, which generated a .midi file.

yeah, they must be pretty good, I've never heard of a band with a piano in it.
Re: Kevin Harrison's Flash Game
Pretty good game and music.
Only suggestion I can recommend is adopting the WASD control scheme because its a bit easier to use but other than that very good job.

Re: Kevin Harrison's Flash Game
The controls are very straightforward, and it being a demo spawning and setup are not important. I found that the AI's ability to precision turn (like 3 degrees or stupidly small increments like that) are an overpowering aiming advantage the AI has. Like kevin had said over gchat "you can't press your finger down for 1/16 of a second" and that makes it difficult to do 180 turns and hit the com accurately from distances away.

Lol it is difficult.
I've been helping kevin by making sound effects from scratch for him to add into the game. Audacity skills ftw!

only way i found to beat the ai easly is by running into him though i did almost kill it in a dogfight but it ran into me killing us both.

Re: Kevin Harrison's Flash Game
lol yeah you know once you lock you never go unlocked if you don't manually move, I think that makes the game a bit too easy. Also I think I'll start cranking on making a better soundtrack than sandy's extremely unfitting piano
Re: Kevin Harrison's Flash Game
uhm no, the com will try to fly past you, but hush if they can't figure out the trick, let them sit for a while on it. I figured it out for myself, then kevin was like "yeah I know about that".

Quoted for absolute truth. Although I'd like to clarify on that. This is an evolving test. It will change from day to day. Possibly weird new bugs have been introduced, possibly exciting new mechanics, ships, weapons, etc. have been added. If you find a bug, wait a few days. If the problem still isn't fixed, post about it here.
Two important things to keep in mind:
1) This is basically a (semi-)public pre-pre-alpha which is more like a sandbox for me to try out new mechanics and features. Do not expect me to do things with it solely so that you can get more enjoyment out of playing in my sandbox. Also do not expect it to be anything less than glitchy. Sorry, but that's the way things go.
2) This game is hosted on an Apache server running on my laptop. It is online whenever I feel like keeping it online (which is most of the time). If it's offline and I'm someplace you can reach me, I'll probably listen to a request to put it online.
A) The flash isn't embedded properly with IE. No I don't plan to fix this. But because I doubt that is the problem,MarthMarthy wrote:GAHH It glitches up on me badly! After loading screen its black and I get to hear the music, and my mouse disappears and comes back randomly!
B) See important thing #1. If it's glitchy, I apologize, but I hope you can understand.
See important thing #2.itsame273 wrote:could not connect...... fayle.....
A) See important thing #2.Nina wrote:yeah loaded up once but after that wont load anymore. You guys ever thought of putting all the files into a rar and having us DL it?
B) I believe Wayne already answered this. The game is by no means finished. You'll have to connect to my laptop if you want the latest cool stuff I've put in for you to break.
Now, about the AI...
It is stupid. I plan to write an immensely more complicated one to handle the chaos that will ensue. Think battles like these:
(Those Xenon cap ships are intense btw)
I added in a limited aim-assist which should help aim with the sensitive controls. Basically, when you fire a bullet that would miss the enemy's future position by within 10 pixels (there a lot of sin's and cos's and pi's and distance formulas and position formulas and crap like that), then the AI takes over and aims your shot to (hopefully) hit the target.
Honestly, I think the AI is too easy with the aim-assist, but you guys claim it's very hard. If you guys haven't tried it with the aim-assist, why don't you try it and tell me if I need to increase the threshold to 15 or even 20 pixels?

Re: Kevin Harrison's Flash Game
To Amos, I would suggest getting mtPaint. It's a bit more complicated, but a lot more powerful than paint for pixel art. It also works on any platform with GTK, which is always a plus for crazy people like me who try to boot Vista as few times as humanly possible.
Also, I'm sorry Sean, but "glitchy" is about the most vague description of a software bug I have ever heard
I am aware of freezes that occur when a ship is destroyed if that is what you are referring to.

While I agree for the most part? ouch. Music isn't exactly top priority right now; no need to flame the poor music composer or game designer. But while we're on that subject, what does everyone think of these tracks being used in a chaotic space shooting game:nullset12 wrote:Piano + space battles? == stupid

I'm probably leaning towards Cyberfire and Highscore at this point.

Re: Kevin Harrison's Flash Game
cyberfire sounds like that song that's played in the MR cff mod for the schoolgrounds map. naaa-hahahaha
welcome to cyberdrome sounds promising....
don't use thermoplastique....
sector 11 and highscore are ok, use if you want to...kinda too upbeat for the current state of the alpha, its a duel...
what is like is this, but I guess that doesn't fit a space shooter is.
I think you should stick with this for now

I am with kelvin, his last pick there is pretty good for space fights, if you are going for that energetic tense "lets do this!!!!!!" kind of mood.
I think this is good, if you are ok with using karaoke versions of songs (live and learn) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXc0XuSKa_Y

I like about half of Frantic, the rest is a bit too slow.
To Wayne, the real game is going to have as many ships in one battle as physically possible while still maintaining a reasonable fps
Very cool music from Immediate Music...
Do you know the terms of use for these or do I have to email them?

Note: if you cant see the update, its because you need to clear your cache.
A selection menu would be very, very helpful lol.
The new ship is nice, I feel more in control due to its slower nature and increased hitpoints.
The new weapons are a bit weak in my hands though. The green cluster fuc spam weapon doesn't work unless I can get a straight line of fire, and when I get it I might as well have killed him in the first shot because once he's in that line he takes a lot of damage. I don't like the blue super shot one at all, its too slow and too ammo consuming to use auto-aim, and the only way to hit with the damn thing is to actually be in a target lock because the projectiles are so slow. Its like trying to snipe a bouncing ping pong ball, except the ping pong ball automatically has a lock on me and has the same weapon. It only takes about four hits from the super shot to kill you, and the computer can aim too well with it.
EDIT: something that just came to mind was the possibility of each ship having its own super move. The old scout ship could have a super move that lets him get a target lock automatically or lets him go really fast or do sharp turns or something, while this new ship could have a ramming super move or something.

Re: Kevin Harrison's Flash Game
edit: I did have a list of stats here, but they are constantly changing. Suffice it to say that red is medium range, high speed, medium damage, medium fire rate. Green is low range, low speed, medium damage, and high fire rate. Blue is high range, low speed, high damage, and low fire rate.
