English Class Is The Most Useless and Most Agrevating Class Ever Invented

Complain about high school english class here. I think its political socialization BS that isn't designed to expand our ability in reading or writing, but to guilt-trip sappy teenagers into fueling the corrupt political machines that use the Minority ticket and Sexism ticket. In case you haven't noticed our whole english experience has been white people telling mostly white teenagers "We did wrong back then, black people suffered and its our fault" times a million. This is done in the name of teaching us right and wrong, but aside from the Holocaust we don't really cover other people being oppressed. Why? Because the African American minority in the United Sates is the largest minority and carries a lot of political clout. So the goal isn't either to teach us how to write OR right and wrong, rather it is a tool used by emotionless politicians in a quest to gain votes, so their moral message of "do the right thing because it is right" is hypocritical. This may be a stretch but I think the Democrats carry most of the blame here, NOT because I dislike them for sending our debt through the roof, but because
A) The teachers union (and most unions in general) are almost literally owned by the Democrats
B) African American voters have been strongly Democratic since JFK
C) There is a super-focus on making the South in particular look bad, which is associated with Republicans nowadays
Yes the Republicans have a significant amount of blame on their shoulders as well, they had control over all three branches for 8 years and only accomplished making school suck more.
To further this Amos-esque rant, I would like to point out some other hypocrisies and oxymorons within english class:
-They encourage us to read books that have been banned in the past because they supposedly were too controversial, but we still have banned books they don't encourage us to read those.
-The political wankery they shove down our throats isn't what they grade on; at least, for our tests. Tests are always over analytical skills but we aren't taught how to analyze a essay. When we write essays they grade us on OUR OPINION. Just today I got back two essays (one was a B another a C) that told me my writing was great but my argument is flawed because he didn't like it. Wait until Mr. Swift gets to grading the essay where I smash english class in one of the paragraphs (I kid you not I wrote one and turned it in)
-They always tell us to be opened minded. This clearly isn't the case when the moral of english class is "Black people are a oppressed minority and you should help them out because white people where the bad guys decades ago". So, being opened minded towards minority tickets and social engineering are ok, but thinking otherwise isn't? They don't want us to be truly free and opened minded people, and saying the opposite is wrong. Restriction is important for society to function, but they go way too far and just blatantly lying to your students is USSR crap.

On top of making us read books that are horribly biased towards the black minority, they make us read BAD books the are horribly biased towards the black minority.

Honestly, I can tolerate all that powerofpoo.
In fact, my only real complaint about English is THE CATCHER IN THE F/UC RYE.

also english is necessary for almost every carreer (including working at mcdonalds, but not for dumping trash, lol)... it's a fundemental to success in life, it also makes u mroe convincing (i know that inspired u amos, jk lol)

English is a laungage we use everyday of our lives we are taught the important stuff when we are kids (nouns verbs sentence structure etc) I dont see why we need to take it in high school if alot of it is just a review of what we learned while younger (my old english teacher said he doesnt know why he is teaching stuff most of us already know)

Humanities AP Lang FTW, it actually teaches me stuff about english and arguments, and how to appeal to different audiences, when to use certain rhetoric devices, etc.

We read about Socrates and his argument for not escaping his death sentence, Lao Tzu and the Dao, We read about the Achilles and Odysseus' arguements (for analysis of techniques and prolepsis, aporia, paralepsis, straw man, etc). We read Pericles' funeral oration and how it was really just a rally to get more soldiers and raise morale. And now we are on the rise and fall of Julius Caesar and talking a bit about charisma.

And the Julius Caesar book is the first one we have had all year. The others have all been short passages (5 o 6 pages).

It can't be COMPLETELY useless anyway. But don't you ever get the feeling that it would be cool to learn Japanese or Chinese or Korean?

it's just michael that is complaining, and he can't spell, he types/writes like Mr. Stanton talks, leaving out important letters that completely change the meaning.

Yeah learning foreign languages is good, I know bits of japanese, chinese, german, and am 'semi-fluent' in spanish. I want to learn Arabic though because the Speech is based on it.

It would be, though I found the chinese classes I took in middle school (basic chinese was offered as a language course) harder than other language classes, mainly due to the lack of an alphabet. Cool stuff to learn though.

There are laungage classes that schools (my old school anyway) offer but they are just horrible (though my japanese class did have an actual teacher from japan to teach though I was in a class full of dumbasses so we hardly learned anything) if there not spanish (only laungage class that was not underfunded).

I want to point out how this poll has the most responses out of any other poll on the forum.

So are the oriental languages actually useful to us (other than reading manga/ watching anime raw)?
Is it worth getting ReosettaStone just to learn such a language?

not sure where you live but in md, we have grandmart and stuff where everyone who works there is either mexican or oriental.

and we have asian "plazas" where everyone who works there is asian.

Yes its useful to learn other laungages. for example you are a big business man who wants to expand overseas to japan while most people would use a translator to avoid embaressment it would look better if you knew the laungage and customs that way you look like you can be trusted more.

GODDAMMIT WHY CAN'T I BE IN UR CLASS!?!?! All we are doing is discussing how to have an argument and writing essays every week, and reading interesting but unrelated stories, there's no name dropping or anything.

So let's assume I have no knowledge of an oriental language before I go to college, meaning none in high school. Should I focus on getting the rest of Spanish down, or should I switch to learning Chinese or Japanese? I see that the Chinese are rapidly growing in today's economy. For example, the U.S. imports much more than it exports, mainly from Walmart (China) and NAFTA (Canada,Mexico).

you're going to want to learn chinese, or some east asian language, because almost all oriental immigrants to the US obtain high ranking positions in corporate or government hierarchy, and engineering jobs and stuff are being delegated to lower salary requiring Indian university graduates, so knowing the culture may get you far in life through connections. The large majority of immigrants today though are spanish speaking so learning spanish may help in being in touch with current street society.
It's ultimately your choice, though i recommend chinese or japanese, that will definitely help with anime and stuff because you can either see the original, or see the almost immediately released afterwards chinese subs/translation.

I also noticed you mentioned Chinese Subs. I suppose Chinese is useful in that you can talk to over a billion people. But do they actually come out with Chinese subs?

I don't know, I am currently trying to learn me some japanese. I feel nice because I am fluent in spanish.

Chinese is the efficient language Japanese would be the fun language. If you want to be a factory owner in china or you are going to be heavily involved in china go with Chinese I guess.

not all animes are english subbed, you just probably haven't heard of ones that aren't translated.
the kara no kyoukai light novels, fate/hollow ataraxia, those are still not translated into english, yet according to felix they are completely translated into chinese already.

There are lots of animes that are subbed or dubbed but alot of times there are things that cant be translated well (jokes, phrases, sayings etc) and sometimes in dubs the script or animations has to be butchered to fit with censorship laws in the states so at times it is best to watch the original raw format that way you can see it how it was ment to be.
