Starting to doubt the existence of the priest and the children, you wonder what the collective voice in your head means by "plot" and such. You start to get dizzy with the metaphysical implications. Suddenly you receive another strange vision, one in which you are merely an observer.
Rows upon rows of busy technicians man consoles surrounding a large holographic display of the Arena.
"Sir, I think we used the sound effects from the wrong game in the beginning there"
"Shhhhh, I'm trying to farm." A man you recognize as the Head GameMaker sits hunched over a console clearly displaying said game.
"Should we tell them about that rule change?"
"Nah, save it for when it would be most inconvenient."
A door slides open.
"What is the meaning of- A-Administrator Rove?"
"My dear Mr. Head GameMaker, I am sorely disappointed in you. Your Arena design did not account for most of the tributes' fears, or desires, their characters."
"I apologize for that, sir. I had no way of knowing before they were chosen."
"It is no matter. I have incorporated my own last minute additions. But seriously, a 2? You give that boring hero-type such a high score for some fancy magic tricks, and then downrank what could prove to be the most interesting character we've had in years? Where is your sense of humor?"
"That tribute demonstrated very low viability in the Arena-"
"It's not about viability, its about entertainment! Is this not all this here, ultimately, about entertaining the masses? Well, there used to be some high-brow political message along with it, but nobody cares about that anymore. Anyways, I'm afraid your time in this position may be cut short."
"I-I'll do my best to raise our viewer ratings, sir. I've included some, er, 'trolly' surprises."
"Good, good, see that you do. I'd hate to see you back out on the front lines again, Grimwind."

Returning to reality, you look around again to find yourself alone in the woods, the priest, children, and wedding altar having mysteriously vanished into thin air. You look at your hand to find the ring was simply a twig bent into a rough loop shape. The red bag, however, is still out of your clutches and likely with Haris, the District 1 man who is now long gone. Staring skyward, it is somewhat difficult to pinpoint the setting sun but you are able to gain a general sense of direction.

A. Improvise a weapon and try to cut off Haris before he can make it back to the Cornucopia to the south.
B. Flee northwards to get the most distance before the Career pack goes hunting.
C. Make camp nearby.

C. Use survival skills borne of poverty to find some edible stuff, and eat fill. Then dig a hole in the ground with some sticks and camo the opening with leaves and sticks and other camo stuff. Sleep in the hole.

D) Go deep into the forest dig a pit and fill it with pointy sticks, then camouflage it with leafy branches and cover with dirt. Sleep in the trees.

You begin to construct a nasty punji stake trap.The sticks you gather do not have sharp tips, but you have no implement to whittle them with.  Digging is difficult and painstakingly slow without proper tools, but you persist in doing so, leaving your arms sore from the effort. Several hours pass before the hole reaches a satisfactory depth to compensate for the sticks' non-lethality. You plant the sticks in the hole and cover it up with a cross-hatched layer of fallen leaves, deadwood, and other ground materials. The cover presents a perfectly normal patch of forest floor to the unsuspecting traveler.

The sun has dipped below the horizon by now. Wiping off the sweat that has accumulated on your forehead, you prepare to ascend to the treetops when you hear the snap of a twig, and freeze. It sounds close.

A. Continue to climb up the tree as quickly and quietly as possible
B. Grab something pointy and position to ambush
C. "Is anyone there?"

D. stand such that the pit is between the sound and our scrawny tribute with a big stick

Sing a siren song and fan-dance with twigs/leaves behind the pit. Lure the poor fool to his fate.

You think of the most alluring song you've heard, and start rocking out to it as if you were drunk.



In response a human figure steps into view, lit by the large fake moon rising up to replace the sun. It's Ralph, somewhat worse for wear. He squints in confusion at your dancing . His clothes are dirty and his face sports a few small cuts.  "Oh, it's you. Good." He smiles and approaches you.

A. Let him fall
B. Stop him and ask what happened

A, the Lord said "LET HIM FALL" AND-

"How ya do- huh?"  You reluctantly cease your singing to command Ralph not to take a step further.
"What? Don't you trust me?"
You ignore his question and start asking your own.
"Uh, well, what happened was..." He looks to the right for a second.
"See, two of the Career guys tried to catch me, but I was uh, too fast for them. Oh lord jesus, I ran for my life. Got these scratches from branches sticking out. I kept on running til I couldn't, and that's how I ended up here."
He sighs, finished with his story.
"Dunno what happened to the other girl, sorry. So, you got a camp all set up?"

A. Yeah come on over[the pit], I'll show you
B. I'm sleeping in the trees
C. Go away

D, "EXCUSE ME? DID YOU SAY LORD JESUS? DIDN'T YOU MEAN LORD KELVIN?!?!?!?"

"Er, what?" Ralph is taken aback at your continued hostility. "Lord...Kelvin? I uh...sure, I meant that."

A. "Have you truly accepted Kelvin into your life, as thy eternal Lord and Savior?"

"Uh...yes, yes, of course. Kelvin is my one true Lord. So you see, I'm on your side here." Ralph nods enthusiastically. "So, uh, is it okay for me to come over now?"

"Oh, haha, you have a trap there? Verrry sneaky." He walks around the pit, now smiling confidently. You notice his hair, once gelled into short vertical spikes, is starting to fall back down. Suddenly, the sound of a large cannon issues from a distance.
You both look up in rapt attention to a strange light show projection that has appeared in the darkened sky. A announcer's voice booms out through the Arena.
"And with a quiet end to the first day, Heeeeere it is folks! Your nightly L-L-L-L-L-LOSER REPORT!!!"
Theme music begins.

The light show is replaced by the face of the girl you saw decapitated by Amos earlier.
"At the, hah, head of the list, is District 5's girl..." A red letter L appears splotchily painted on her forehead, and a large embossed "NOOB" is stamped across the entire image. Laugh tracks and a crowd booing accompany the visual elements. The process repeats for the others. Fortunately(or unfortunately) you do not see Kristine or anyone else that you knew more of besides their District number. Five total have died today:

The skycast ends with the national anthem and emblem, an avian creature composed of a red wiry material.
You climb up to a suitable tree branch and drape yourself across it. Ralph initially tries to follow you but after seeing your glare, he decides to ascend to a neighboring tree, stopping at a branch not nearly as high as you are.
"Whew! I don't know about you, but I'm really tired.  How about we get to sleep?"

A. Pretend to go to sleep

Even though you know you'll need rest to survive the coming day, you have some misgivings about Ralph, so you lay down and keep one eye cracked open to watch him. Unfortunately he seems to be doing the same thing.
Not wanting to blow your cover, you turn over so you don't have to face him. Half an hour passes, and you are beginning to genuinely fall asleep when you hear the rustling of leaves behind you.
It is shortly followed by the scraping of shoes on bark, and you know Ralph has climbed down from the tree and is walking away.

A. Ask him what he's doing
B. Silently follow him

Time to assassinate his ass. You are the Assassassin. It's you.
In a burst of speed, you scramble down the tree and dash towards Ralph. He turns just in time to see you pounce. Not actually being a trained assassin, you tackle him instead of killing.
A jarring sensation goes through your arms as you make contact. "Wh- AAAAGGHHH!!" he yells as you both fall onto the forest floor. "G-get off me!" He starts writhing in your arms, making you feel very uncomfortable.

A. Keep him pinned

C. Let him go

D. Keep him pinned and bite the tender part of his neck. Awooo towards the moon. Punch him in the head if he tries to push you off.

C. "Just testing your reflexes, if I were trying to kill you, you would've been dead."

You let go of Ralph, laughing and telling him he failed your test. He scrambles a few feet away before getting up. "A- are you crazy, you stupid girl? I- I was just taking a bathroom trip, that's all."

A. I'll be watching you
B. Yep. [Go back to sleep]

D. Convincingly Faint and see how he reacts.

E. Point towards the stain of period blood upon his back that was left from that tackle. Wait until he leaves before picking a different tree to sleep in.

Clutching your chest, you make a half swooning, half choking noise and fall to the earth.
"I, Er..." Ralph stands there for a moment, then walks around your prone body. You close your eyes and slow breathing as he looks at your face. He prods you lightly in the side by the tip of a stick, and it takes all of your concentration not to react.
Finally convinced, he breathes a sigh of relief and starts backing away slowly.
Just in case Ralph is still watching, you remain still until the sound of his footsteps mingle with the din of the forest. You are very tempted to go to sleep for real right there on the ground, but muster the strength to clamber up a random tree before dozing off.

Day 2

You wake up bright and early the next morning. The rough texture of the tree bark has left an imprint from pressing on your back all night, but the rest of you feels refreshed and ready for action. Climbing down from the tree, you hear soft bird calls in the distance. Without any immediate danger present, you can finally appreciate the natural beauty of the forest. Ralph is nowhere to be seen.

You find kindling in abundance scattered around the forest floor. Overturning a fallen log reveals a mass of squirming pale white and pink grub worms, that in reaction burrow deeper into the decaying wood and dirt. Scanning further across the ground, you find a round crop of squat, spindly mushrooms with spiral patterns on their caps. Slightly disappointed by the current fare, you turn your search skyward.

You find several deciduous trees shorter than the others. Hanging from their branches are bunches of purple berries with a slightly squarish shape to them. You are about to pluck them when a bright blue glint catches your eye. You turn right to find a perfectly shaped box of Rice Krispies cereal resting on the seat of a chrome plated folding chair. Over the chair is a large cardboard box of which one side is propped up by a stick, which would provide some nice shade to anyone sitting in it.

Your stomach starts to grumble. What’s for brunch?

A. Grubs
