OpenOffice.org
OpenOffice.org, commonly known as OOo or OpenOffice, is an open-source application suite whose main components are for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, and databases.[6] OpenOffice is available for a number of different computer operating systems, is distributed as free software and is written using its own GUI toolkit. It supports the ISO/IEC standard OpenDocument Format (ODF) for data interchange as its default file format, as well as Microsoft Office formats among others. As of June 2011, OpenOffice.org supports over 120 languages.[3] As free software, users are free to download, modify, use and distribute OpenOffice.org. LibreOffice is a fork of OpenOffice.org which was formed by many of the original developers of OpenOffice.
Some of you might prefer LibreOffice, I'm not sure why. Anyways, it is free, does pretty much everything Microsoft Office does (That you actually use in everyday tasks), open source, WRITTEN IN JAVA , and can save and open in MS Office format to port between home and school/work. They can all export files to PDF, wow.
List o' Programs:
Writer = word processor (Word) Self Explanatory, I use this for pretty much all non-code text (Well, everything I can't do in Notepad...lol)Calc = Spreadsheet editor (Excel) I haven't used this much, but that's because I don't deal in spreadsheets much.
Impress = Slideshow presentations (Powerpoint)
Base = Database Management (Access) omfj, I had no idea such a powerful tool was at my fingertips. most of you have no use for something like this, but its nice to brag about.
Draw = "Vector Graphics Editor" Hrmm there are a lot of better options for that kind of stuff, this just comes with the package. I would recommend you use GIMP instead.
Math = Equation Editor

Re: OpenOffice.org
OpenOffice is outdated. It's not even pre-installed anymore on Ubuntu 11.04 natty narwhal. It's been replaced by LibreOffice.

I'm telling other people to get it because you're lazyitsame273 wrote:Corenat Rovarnus wrote:Yeah exactly, get OpenOffice insteaditsame273 wrote:idc too lazy

Ubuntu is linux for noobs, please tell me all the wonderful ways that LibreOffice is so much better than Open is since OpenOffice is 'outdated'.

Re: OpenOffice.org
Hrm I read your article, you kinda trolled yourself.
This should settle most consumer level questions.
I found no difference between the two offerings either in performance or stability.
Apparently you think small incremental improvements over the course of a few months make it outdated suddenly.
What LibreOffice does bring to the table are mostly small, incremental improvements to the functionality of OpenOffice.org.
I guess that's pretty awesome, please tell me what that means.Perhaps the most significant new feature found in LibreOffice is support for Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) files in Writer, Impress, and Draw.
It really doesn't matter. Like I said with Kai-Wario, if you love your epic productivity suite so much make your own topic.Future versions of either suite will be able to open your documents equally well, and in all likelihood, so will any future competitors.
Re: OpenOffice.org
I think what Sandow was getting at is that OpenOffice was acquired by big time software company Oracle Corporation, which controls its development, while LibreOffice is developed by The Document Foundation, a community based organization.
"The Document Foundation was created partially over fears that Oracle Corporation, after acquiring Sun Microsystems, would discontinue developing OpenOffice.org as they had done with OpenSolaris." - Wiki
So supposedly OpenOffice is more vulnerable to corporate interests. There doesn't seem to be much difference between the two though. I've only ever used LibreOffice so I can't testify.
