Dwarf Fortress and Gene Pool
Here are two games which I've found to be surprisingly interesting:
1. Gene Pool - A kind of artificial life simulation.
For an absolutely hilarious and thorough introduction into the game, I suggest reading the GREAT GENE POOL COMPETITION.
It's not just good to get to know what the game's about, but it's also one of the funniest threads I've ever come across.
2. Dwarf Fortress - The most complicated game. Ever.
I think I've already told Wayne about this, and maybe Michael too, but there's this game which I downloaded a year or two ago called Dwarf Fortress. The first time I tried it out, I was seriously put off by the impossible-to-navigate text interface and overall sucky ascii graphics. As I said, it's been a year or two since I first tried it and I thought I'd give it another go.
This time I was AMAZED at how complicated this game is. Seriously, I could spend 20 pages listing all of the wacky features that this game has. And the amount of detail in the game is stunning. The graphics are well worth the trade off.
I have, however, also come across a graphic set by Phoebus which makes the game look good. It replaces all of the ascii with real images.
Half of the challenge of this game is just learning how to play it. Once you do learn, however, it is a worthwhile experience.
