"Do you jest at a time like this? Pardon me for not finding the humor in this situation. My brother lies bleeding in my arms. Do you not realize that he was targeted by the church? The dissent between the Cardinals you spoke of before must be true. I spoke to some demon-in-human-flesh by the name of Cardinal Allaire."
His voice is cold and venomous (almost like how I imagine Leewan's.)
"I must send word to Cardinal Schiller."

"Do you not see this blood?! And that bastard Allaire spoke to me, and to my face promised to find news of him. He left me alone for hours until I was given a sign by Themis and managed to find my way to their torture chambers. This is no way to treat sinners. Given them a quick death or allow them to repent, but do not condemn them to suffering for the rest of their lives."

Re: Legendary Exploits of Three Not Viking Brothers
Leewan raises a brow. "If the church applied such strict judgements to lawbreakers there would be no faith left in Themis. I see Gwain's blood, a punishment long time coming for his years of dalliances with women who he has not betrothed. It is better for the house this way. There will be too many bastard children of Gwain claiming a stake in our household fortunes as it is. I had given thought to disavowing Gwain of his rights to the Griswald name to avert such a disaster. However, now he can put his mind to recovery and studying on matters of worth in this world. Perhaps your Allaire knew of Gwain's whereabouts, and in that hypothetical his telling you would change nothing. The church still has authority to punish offenders and heretics."

Re: Legendary Exploits of Three Not Viking Brothers
The brief silence is interjected upon by two maids rushing in and gasping in panic at the sight of Gwains condition. They quickly take him to a bed and see to it he is given clean clothes to further soil and that his wounds are as clean as they can be in the medieval era. Robillard spends day and night by his brother who shortly after being put in the bed develops a high fever and becomes quite sickly over the next few days. Detlef offers his condolences to Robillard and Leewan though Leewan quickly dismisses them and simply says it was Gwains own actions that brought it down upon him. Robillard can't help but feel somewhat responsible for Gwains condition and prays to Themis not to take his younger brother and to allow him a chance at redemption.
The remaining days go by and Gwains health begins to turn for the better and he is able to stay awake throughout the day of the ball. He finds he is able to walk, albeit without much grace in the slightest, and can keep water and food down but he still suffers from a bad headache due to the fever. It is up to Gwain whether he will go to the ball or participate in the tournament and Leewan remembers that this is the final day that any of his brothers can register for the tournament. Eichenwald comes to the estate around midday (several hours before everyone is to set off for the ball) with the model ship and is dressed well for the occasion. Detlef has had numerous drinks and foods set up by his servants for everyone as they wait and discuss before the event much to everyones enjoyment (except Gwain who is in a rather sour mood). A number of decisions must be made before everyone can head to the ball: mainly whether Gwain and/or Detlef will be accompanying, who is participating in the tournament the following days, and what everyone will wear to the event (military style clothing or other such formal wear; perhaps even armor if anyone wants to be particularly intimidating).

Robillard will absolutely, positively, 100% be wearing his armor (the new fancy plate mail that was ordered a month ago). He won't be entering the tournament (unless Leewan decides to change his mind about that?).

Re: Legendary Exploits of Three Not Viking Brothers
Leewan wears his regular military dress without the armor. That is his only outfit for time spent beyond the walls of Heretic's end. Detlef, and Eichenwald (per the agreement) will be going. Leewan "advises" Gwain to remain at the Detlef estate so that none would question the origin of Gwain's limp, and the eventual questions regarding Gwain's "fresh cut". Leewan has said nothing further on the tournaments, his last word was only that Robillard must choose between Themis, the king and his family.

Re: Legendary Exploits of Three Not Viking Brothers
When Gwain finally regains consciousness, the events in the dungeon seem like some kind of cruel nightmare. It is only after one of the nurses informs him of what happened to his body that the vivid details come rushing back. A torrent of emotions--anger, pain, betrayal--overwhelm Gwain's psyche and leave him realing in the depths of his own mind for hours. For several days, Gwain refuses to speak to anyone, shutting out any and all attempts at reconciliation. The jovial, confident scoundrel is dead. It remains to be seen what will become of Gwain's personality once he is ready to talk.
As soon as he is able, Gwain heads to the nearest archery range and practices the sport furiously. Initially, his injury prevents him from holding a proper stance, and his first shots are a dismal shadow of his former prowess. Undeterred, Gwain continues to practice deep into the night. And the next night, and the next night.
When Leewans approaches him to ask about his participation in he ball and tournament, Gwain responds simply. "I will win, now leave me be."

Re: Legendary Exploits of Three Not Viking Brothers
With all matters attended to. Leewan, Robillard, Detlef, and Eichenwald make for the monastery for the coronation. Robillard knows the way from his previous venture there and the four arrive fairly soon after leaving Detlefs estate. As can be seen on approach numerous lords and nobles are heading in the same direction as you and the bells from atop the grand structure begin ringing to signify the event. Robillard can't help but notice the time of day causes the sun the settle perfectly at the top of the buildings belltower causing the golden statue of Themis to cast a shadow with its wings.
You all arrive at the front entrance of the building and see the Kings guard asking everyone entering for their names and those accompanying them. Leewan notices a couple of Lords he recognizes waiting in the line same as you all but decides to wait until inside to find a potential group to sit by. Eventually, you come to the line and a simple give of your name and domain gets you right through the door. and you see as grand a site as you would have expected. At the very front of the grand room, a single oaken seat is in place of where the altar would have been and every bench within the building is padded with red cushions. Where Robillard remembers numerous altars and displays of artifacts along the sides of the room crimson red drapes cover them and instead in front of each is a painting of every King of Acren to come before with the most recent being on a stand right next to the chair at the front.
In the small balconies overlooking the whole event, Leewan and Robillard can see priests, the family members of the new Kings house, and his houses trusted servants. Notably, Leewan quickly notices that many houses have not sent their leaders to the events as he can see individuals with representative insignias but not the leaders he would recognize. Those present that Leewan do recognize are Lord Friesler (the one you had spoken to at the city you stopped at), Lord Stirner (his wife is a good friend of yours and your houses have been on good terms for numerous years), and Lord Holzer (the man Gwain is particularly interested in). Sitting next to Lord Holzer Robillard notices the man whom he had spoken to after being sent away by the group of nobles earlier that week. There are others who Leewan recognizes if there is no interest in these three.

Leewan remembers his purpose here. To make clear to the king that Griswald is loyal to the new ruler and to leave. With that in mind he proceeds through the night with minimal unnecessary interaction.

Robillard, always unsure of himself in social situations, will do the same. He will wave at Edward Holzer and also look around for any pretty young women (although he DEFINITELY won't go talk to them. He is far too nervous and tongue-tied to do that).

Re: Legendary Exploits of Three Not Viking Brothers
Electing to avoid any interactions with their peers, Leewan and Robillard find a set of seats on some benches towards the back and away from the main aisle. Detlef and Eichenwald are happily talking amongst themselves about the art of trade and other such things leaving Robillard and Leewan to sulk without so much as a word being spoken between the two. Robillard tries his best to get Edwards attention but he fails miserably due to his positioning amongst the crowd. There is clearly no common attire amongst those present as nobody is quite sure how to present themselves to the new King. Some wear formal military outfits while others wear fanciful ball style clothing with long flowing cloaks or tall hats. Still others (though much much fewer) wear armor and holstered weapons but Robillard notices only two other individuals wear full plate like he is (how Robillard is even sitting is beyond me but we'll assume he figures something out).
It takes a while longer for everyone else to come in and all the seats fill up quickly leaving many others to be left standing towards the back. Eventually, a trio of Cardinals come through the main door and down the main pathway in the room to stand to the left of the chair at the center. Robillard recognizes Cardinal Allaire immediately by the silver that lines his red robes and the other two as being individuals who were with him at the sermon he had gone to. Once the trio reaches the chair Allaire raises his hand for quiet and everyone within the building goes silent (takes a little while due to how many people there are). Once the air is still a resounding gong from the bells above resound through the church and Allaire lowers his hand and announces throughout the grand hall
"Let this bell mark the end of the old Kings reign over Acren. When the bell next tolls Prince Gerwald Bernheardt will be exist no longer and will from then on be King Bernheardt the third. All rise for the Prince of Acren."
On Allaires command everyone within the room stands (takes Robillard an awkward amount of time due to his armor) and shortly thereafter a double line of armored men file in through the door with shields held firm against breastplates which each vividly display the royal houses crest (a black wolf's head howling from a side on view) and after a dozen pass the new king to be walks forward. Leewan can't remember how old Gerwald was when he last saw him but he now sees that the young child he once saw before has grown into a frightening visage. Gerwalds black hair flows down to the base of his neck in curved waves and his dark green eyes stare straight ahead blink only when a piece of hair moves into his face which he moves out of his way with a quick hand gesture. His face is cleanly shaven aside from a simple goatee that surrounds his mouth that betrays his joy with a small smirk. His attire consists of a black wolf fur pelt that acts as a collar to a black cloak that flows behind him and has red lining along its inside portion. His silver embroidered and gold buttoned clothes fit his form tightly and his brown boots cause him to move silently along the floor compared to the loud clanging of his guards. Following right behind him Leewan recognizes the old captain of the Kings Guard in his silver armor and fur cloak that hangs to his left side covering his sword but a second individual follows next to the captain who Leewan has never seen before in his life. The individual is a woman wearing a simple and plain white dress but most strikingly of all wears a brown blindfold over her eyes and a golden crown of thorns. Robillard and Leewan can't help but notice Allaire glare at the woman for a moment as they walk forward.
The guards in front of the trio fan out to form a semicircle around the dias and another group of guards bring up the rear and close the semicircle once the three are inside and facing the three cardinals. In unison, the guards draw their swords and plant the tips straight down into the cobblestone. Immediately after this, the trio kneel on the steps before the Cardinals and Allaire speaks again,
"Prince Gerwald Bernheardt, do you swear to serve your country, Themis, and most of all her people until you die and to never let personal ambition sway your decisions?"
The Prince responds "I do"
Allaire "Then rise and take a seat in the same chair your father, his father, and so on until the founding of Acren sat before."
Gerwald stands and takes his seat in the chair. Allaire waves his hand for everyone to be seated and a moment goes by for everyone to do so. Robillard can't help but swear he hears a caw of a crow from beyond a window above him.
Allaire "Prince Gerwald Bernheardt, before you are the ruling houses and nobles of Acren. It is not I or Themis who may grant you rulership over them but they. Let all who support this Princes rise to Kingship stand and pronounce as one their sponsorship. If any are vehemently against his rule then let them speak now and let your concern be known."
You all see a great number of individuals stand up including Lord Holzer and those next to him. Interestingly you notice that Lord Frieslerand Lord Stirner do not stand but members of their parties do. Neither Eichenwald nor Detlef stands leaving you two with your own decisions.

Robillard looks to the side and remains seated, following Leewan's lead. Â He does not wish to anger the King or Leewan, but between those two, Leewan scares him much more.

Leewan speaks loudly from his seat. "Your majesty, king Bernheardt, you are my lord and lord to every soul of Acren. There is no question that your word is now law, and my hesitation to rise is not born of any lacking in loyalty. I am floored by concern for the future of the borders and oncoming legions. Every lord and representative standing here has come first to pay respect and second to be witness to your war council. Your majesty, King Bernheardt, what is your word on the dark times ahead? Are you every bit the decimator of foes your ancestors were?"

Re: Legendary Exploits of Three Not Viking Brothers
[He is still Prince at the moment, not King yet]
A number of mumbles can be heard around the room as Leewan raises his question. Allaire raises his hand for silence and once his demands are met he turns to Gerwald and says "Prince Bernheardt, your response."
The Prince remains seated and says in a loud and clear voice to all "Dark times are indeed upon us. By my own orders, everyone within this kingdom has been made aware of the threat that faces us that my Father failed to contain. I did this not so you all could prepare or to frighten citizens, instead, I did this so all would hear my words now."
Now the Prince stands and begins pacing back and forth some and giving grand gestures to emphasize his remarks "The foe we face is not unknown to us. Every one of our forefathers has fought this same menace since the fall of the old Empire. Since my family came to power we have always been at the forefront of containing the threat from the east and many of you have lost your own sons to this cause. I cannot bring myself to say how many have died in my own arms to contain this threat but I swear to you all here and now that I will go beyond simple containment of our enemies. I will see to it that our armies deal with the interlopers that threaten our borders now swiftly and with extreme prejudice and then I will not just drive them back but expand the borders of Acren for the first time in centuries. Every house that wishes to join me and our country in taking what rightly belongs to us can do so and I will personally put every damn Lich's head that I come across on a pike. I will not settle for a country constantly under siege, but a country that grows and conquers those beneath it."
Before Leewan can respond numerous other voices interject. It is entirely unclear what they all say but from what you can tell they vary from protest to calls for the enemies blood. Allaire raises his hand for silence again and everyone quiets quickly. He then points to Lord Fiesler and says "I do believe you spoke first, sir."
Friesler stands so he can better be heard and says passionately "What you call for is nothing less than a renewed crusade. We have already lost so many sons and soldiers to the blasted lands and you would have us heap on another generation of children to the burn piles? We will all support the banishment of intruders on our lands but invading the hellish plains of the Blasted Lands will not end well for Acren!"
Before the Prince can respond numerous other individuals pronounce their support for Frieslers words. Allaire is again forced to call for silence thoug this time everyone is quieting before he even raises his hand.
Gerwald responds speaking with fervor in his voice "It is that same mentality that has gotten us into the mess we are now! How long have we simply held our foes at bay? How many have died over the decades to keep us safe so that nobles like you can grow fat on their wealth. Last I checked, our goddess Themis tought us that we shouldn't cower from our enemies but strike anyone down who would dare to threaten the safety of our nation."
"Like your own brothers?!" Gasps of astonishment are heard across the hall and a tremendous amount of commotion makes it impossible to hear Allaire's demands for quiet. Stepping out into the main aisle Leewan immediately recognizes the old Kings closest advisor Otto Kirstein. Kirstein is a rather old man (in his mid fourties, old for the medieval days) and wears a simple grey cloak around his black courtly clothing. He is slightly hunched over and his wooden cane gives away his numerous years bent over a desk in service to the old King. "You speak of cutting down our foes but it is you who needs to be cut down Gerwald! Your father is dead because of his overwhelming grief at the news of his eldest son's death and his second's banishment. You and I both know your father would never have named you his successor as he knew just what sort of King you would be. Not a benevolent ruler, but a tyrant!"
The fury is extremely clear is the Princes' face. The guard Captain yells out "Guards seize this man! No man no matter his age should speak to royalty like so and not have their tongue cut out."
The guards begin to move in on Kirstein but the Prince yells out "Stop!" All can see the Prince has raised his fist straight up and after a brief moment he lowers it and continues speaking "You claim to have known my father and yet it was you who advised he join the crusading forces. Everyone here knows my eldest brothers were constantly at odds due to the favor the second constantly had in the eyes of the court and Acrens people. My father first born child was nothing more than a man consumed by jealousy and by brothers feud was what drove them to their actions against one another. The crusade of containment is what killed my father, not my brothers actions."
Kirstein looks the Prince square in the eyes and says "And how convenient that you and the rest of the court arrived just after your eldest brother was killed and Antonin was standing over his corpse. Even more convenient that a knight and a scout, both of which happen to be killed a week after the event, could corroborate the story that Antonin had killed his brother. Antonin and Alwin may have been at frequently at odds but they still loved each other nonetheless. Anyone who would convince themselves that Antonin would kill Alwin is a complete fool. My house will neve support your reign Gerwald, and neither will many others here today."
Kirstein begins walking away back towards the main door. The all stare at the man as he walks as with eyes looking straight ahead of him and all that is said in response by the Prince is "We will see Otto, this country needs a strong ruler and everyone here knows it."

Re: Legendary Exploits of Three Not Viking Brothers
(I thought the description of the prince being sworn in was the coronation, oh well)
Leewan addresses the court:
"Either one of you here who harbors resentment and disapproval towards our next king draw your blade and inflict mortal wound on him or be on with discussing matters of state ..."
Leewan turns to the prince.
"... Or your majesty, remove resistance from your midst with haste by words or with the utmost violence a human frame can withstand."
Leewan pauses, too publicly showing his bottomless wellspring of apathy towards all present. Through his uncaring he remembers the standard social respect demanded by royalty.
"If it would suit you, your majesty."

Re: Legendary Exploits of Three Not Viking Brothers
Much to Leewan's surprise, it is Lord Holzer who responds in an almost equally uncaring voice "I agree, malcontents draw you blades now or let us be on with this ceremony."
A long pause goes on and no sounds of blades being drawn are heard. The only sound that breaks the silence is Kirstein opening the door to the church and walking out. A resounding thud is heard as the door closes and finally, Allaire breaks the tension "Then so it is that none opposed this Princes ascension to Kinghood. Take your seat Prince Bernheardt."
The Prince stares out at the door for a couple of seconds before turning back to the seat without a word. Before he sits the blindfolded women walks up to him and whispers something in his ear and then walks back to the same position she was standing in before. Once the Prince is sitting Allaire turns and nods to one of the Cardinals behind him. The Cardinal turns and walks over to a box that sits atop a small wooden table. Pulling a key from his sleeve the priest inserts it into the plain wooden box and opens its top and shortly thereafter reaches in and pulls out a silver crown with a pair of red rubies flanking a large sapphire in its center. Other than the gems embedded within, the crown is as much a statement of the pragmatic people of Acren as the castles that are spread across its landscapes. Completely lacking any fanciful detail, the crown looks as though it was created during a period when its original owner had little time to wait for fanciful ornaments (a probably true notion considering how Acren was founded).
The Cardnial walks steadily over to Allaire while speaking a prayer to Themis, one Robillard himself is unfamiliar with. Allaire takes the crown from the Cardinals hands who subsequently bows and walks backwards to where he had originally been standing. Allaire turns and hovers the crown above Gerwalds head and speaks in a commanding voice "Under the watchful gaze of Themis, this boy has grown into a man. Under her guidance, this man may become wise in his old age such that the youth will never question his words. Do you accept Themis' guidance and this crown Prince Bernheardt?"
Confidently The Prince responds, "I accept the guidance of the hawk so that I may best serve my people. I accept this crown so that all may know I am King and all know to whom they owe their fealty. I accept Themis as my only master and when I draw my last breath it will be with her name on my lips."
Allire lowers the crown gently upon the Princes head and once his hands draw away he pronounces to all present "Then you are Prince Gerwald Bernheardt no longer. By the power Themis invests into me I pronounce you King Bernheardt the Fourth! May your reign be grand and echo throughout the ages to come!"
In unison the entirety of those within the monastery stand and applaud. The sound is deafening and shakes the stain glass windows that let in the light from outside. The new King stands from his chair and graciously bows to the crowd before turning the Allaire and the Cardinals who bow to each other. Allaire calls for silence and once it is quiet the King shouts with a salute "With blood and honor we defend! With steel and horse we conquer! With heart and soul, we avenge!"
The guards standing at attention raise their blades straight into the air in salute and a resounding gong from the bells above echo through the hall and across the city. King Bernheardt IV gazes out upon his subjects for several seconds before lowering his hand and saying "My fathers reign has ended, and so begins mine. All are welcome to the castle tonight for celebration and tomorrow begins the grand tournament. I eagerly look forward to working with you all for the future of Acren!"
The guards lower their blades and begin walking out in a double file line again. The King and the others on the central dais follow behind the first couple guards and the last of them bring up the rear of the line. As they leave all applaud and the applause go on until the last Kings Guard has passed through the door.
Once the clapping stops Detlef says with a smile "Quite the dramatic ceremony. Here I was worried the day would be spoiled with bloodshed when Kirstein did what he did."
Eichenwald laughs and says "You Vilkings (yes that's on purpose) are such a strange bunch. Where I come from we don't have any grand ceremonies like this when leaders are elected. Yet alone people threatening each others throats."

Robillard is shocked. His mind is filled with memories of the last Crusade. The screams of men, heretics and faithful sounding alike. The fires of war, sizzling flesh and burning bone. The smell of the dead, mixed with the sweat and the shit and blood. The feel of Gideon's body in his arms as he was forced to watch his friend's lifeblood pour through his fingers, helpless to stop its flow.

Leewan has nothing to say. The political war for the crown and tonight's celebrations are only distractions and idle use of time.
"Robillard, tonight will be rife with trivialities. Keep your composure this night Robillard, and remember you do not bear the authority to make promises for our house. I am returning to Detlef's estate with our guardsmen to contemplate in quiet."
Leewan begins exiting the castle.

Detlef calls after you as you leave the monastery "Come now Leewan. Don't tell me you'll miss out on the chance at a personal audience with the new King and other Lords. Surely you can see the opportunities that await? I assure you I plan to make ample worth of this opportunity myself."

Re: Legendary Exploits of Three Not Viking Brothers
Leewan takes his leave from the monastery and begins heading back to the estate. By the time he returns it has become completely dark out and he learns that Gwain is still outside practicing his archery for the events to come. Electing not to bother Gwain he retires for the night to contemplate the future.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As Leewan leaves Robillard hears Eichenwald mutter to himself about the awkwardness of someone presenting the model without the Lord who's credit it is being present. Detlef simply shakes his head and smiles at the usual behavior of Leewan and says "Well then, it looks like it's us three going to the celebrations. Come now cousin, don't let your brother deter you from your own fun."
With that, the trio of Eichenwald, Detlef, and Robillard make their way out of the monastery and through the now very crowded street that leads to the castle gates. After no small amount of pushing and shoving Robillard arrives at the grand walls that have countless banners and flags fluttering in the air to mark the new King and falls into one of the three lines where guards are determining who gets in. Robillard and company are briefly interrogated by the guards for who he and his companions are but are allowed through the main gate just as the sun is setting and the lanterns and other light sources in the courtyard are being lit.
From the courtyard, the castle is equally as imposing as Heretics End. Unfortunately, the Griswald family doesn't have the funds that the royal family does to put on as much of a show as is going on. All throughout the courtyard musicians play soothing music and waiters carry platters of food for people to eat. Dancers put on shows to match the music being played and already crowds are mingling.
Detlef notices Robillards confusion at what is planned for the night and he says "This is merely the period to allow everyone coming to the event to arrive. Whenever the King decides enough people are here the doors will open and the heads of house will be introduced along with their titles and accomplishments. We'll be shown through one of those two doors to fill the ballroom before the Lords are announced." He points to a pair of doors on both sides of the main entrance which itself is a solid iron-reinforced wooden door that stands a full fifteen feet tall.

Detlef nudges you and smiles as he says "Don't worry cousin. I'd be surprised if anyone asks you to dance in full armor. Unless you aim to impress any ladies with a surprising amount of grace."
Eichenwald gives a small chuckle and says "I'll wait here by the entrance. The model is supposed to be brought here by some of your servants Detlef."
Detlef nods and says "We'll see you on the inside then. I'll keep Robillard out of trouble and spare him from any awkward situations he gets himself in."

Robillard is relieved to find that he will not be expected to dance.
"This is my first ball, you know. I'm glad you will stand by me. I do not wish to shame the Griswald name through my military manners. Now, I also must ask, what sort of refreshments are usually provided at events such as these?"

Robillard goes around the courtyard looking for Edward Holzer. Eventually, Robillard spots him standing next to the same man he was sitting next to in the monastery (presumably his father) who is speaking to a group of five individuals of various houses and rank. Edward doesn't seem to have noticed Robillard as he is paying acute attention to the conversation before him.

Unfortunately, all Robillard hears before his eavesdropping is noticed is him saying "...a fantastic nose for finding the best way to make a profit." He and a number of those listening turn to you and Lord Holzer says "Can I help you?"
