great we have a full 12, I was going to write the prologue on the first day of school with kelvin as our 12th, but we can start now I guess.

well, it is a good idea, the encounters are written for a full party, therefore a party missing even one PC will have trouble with the serious encounter ( for example combat if you are missing your tank or buffer)

Yeah but bringing the Tank on a mission that requires guile, stealth, subterfuge, and subtly isn't really appropriate. Conversely, bringing the rouge into a Gladiator Pit isn't a good idea.

ok well obviously the tank group isn't headed off to the sneaky halls of ninja-ness

and the rogue group isn't going to the open plain of plain sight and endless death

then the GM can use his sentient thought and make up encounters that work, also in a group large enough that they can split up freely you most often have someone who is a sub tank.

Also, considering how DnD is built, we often think of it the wrong way, mmorpgs have those set styles but in DnD you can have a mix of good stuff, you could be a wizard tank, or a magical rogue, or an arcane healer, not things you are usually accustomed to. In short, if you have to close combat characters (where neither are stealth or skill specialist classes) then you have two tanks more or less.
