Chunky Wars: Hun? Empty Chunky Wars: Hun?

Post by Xenoe 2015-04-15, 23:59

Alright, so on one sleepless night, I couldn't sleep, so I was just thinking about random shit and I was like, how about I also get on the RPG hosting bandwagon?

Nah, jk, that wasn't really my thought process, but I desire to GM a freestyle forum RPG was real, and so let me just get the info about the wonderful* RPG I had in my head down, and see if anybody wanted to do it.

*not approved by the FDA or endorsed by any other legal authority

Of course, we already have like, 2 RPG's going on this forum, so this thing isn't gonna start anytime soon, but maybe after Chocolate ends there's something to look forward to with reasonable certainty. This post is only here to serve as a placeholder for my idea, and maybe for people to state their interest or not.

Enough about why, when and where, though, I'mma get to the details of the setting.

Genre: Modern(World history definition) Fantasy

Setting: Its a world not much unlike ours, although its got magic and with that, all the associated mayhem. The time period and place is similar to pre-WWI Europe, after the industrial revolution, but of course with the inclusion of magic in the lives of humanity, some things in history and the advancement of man took a different turn.

The story takes place on the largest continent in this fantasy world, the Mainland, or as the inhabitants call it, Noria. On this continent there were dozens and dozens of countries, and still are, although most of the smaller nations are now puppet states. In the end, after centuries of power struggles, six powers emerged.

Kingdom of Cadelion : An island nation to the north west of the continent, that also has a foothold on the mainland through a swath of land it owns on the western extreme of the Noria. Its main body consists of three large islands positioned linearly towards the mainland, with its largest, and its heartland, the island that is farthest away relative to the continent. As a result of their heartland being ocean bound, their naval might knows no equal, and their armada serves as their way of projecting power across the ocean. A monarchy since days unremembered, it has recently become even more autocratic as the monarch initiated many unpopular reforms to strip the nobility of their power.

Kingdom of Panalis: The Kingdom of Panalis is the western-most country in Noria, not counting its mainly ocean born neighbors. It shares a long history, and the same language as Cadelion, however cultural differences have rendered the two countries bitter rivals rather than close allies, with each proclaiming that they are the true nation for the "Franglite" people. They are also a monarchy similar to Cadelion, but the constant power struggle between the crown and nobility went the other way for Panalis, making the ruler almost just a figurehead. They are in some ways more of a republic for the nobility now, although the king is still referred to as the head of state.

Republic of Rimeria: A massive island nation to the direct west of the continent, its landmass over twice the combined area of Cadelion. It is quite far away from mainland Noria, comparable to the distance between England and Greenland. It is, however, a newer country, with only a few hundred years of history, having been colonized only because of improvements to sailing technology that allowed masses of people to escape the overpopulated metropolises of the mainland and into a new world. Due to being closest to Panalis and Cadelion, the state language of Rimeria is also Franglic (English for all intents and purposes), and it, along with Panalis and Cadelion, are refered to by the term "Franglite Triangle." Previously a large band of independent trading posts, towns, and companies, started by merchants and pilgrims, it has since evolved into a single entity after a few hundred years of intermingling. Allies to both Panalis and Cadelion, Rimeria likes to pretend that the increasing tensions between its allies doesn't exist, and everything is going all dandy.

This nation is unique in this world in that it is a firm upholder of republican values (at least ideologically), and its government at the top consists of a Senate, two presidents, and the Court of the Republic. This is also going to be the country of residence for the player characters (although presence of immigration states that the players can be from any country they wish, but their residence will be in Rimeria.

Kingdom of Kremilla: Eastern neighbor to Panalis, occupies the heartland of the Noria continent, which is rich in food and ores. They speak a different language, and hail from a different cultural lineage than the western Franglite Triangle, but are a firm ally of Panalis if only for the purpose of keeping each other's lands safe from outside forces. Has the largest and best armed land forces of the continent.

Vosulil Empire: Considered barbarians by most of the inhabitants of Noria, they occupy the Easternmost portion of the continent. Their land has great vertical breadth, and has the most diversity in ecosystems, from tundra to rain-forest, and from plains to desert. As their name of empire implies, they are highly imperialistic and will expand at any given opportunity, they have, however, been stopped from making advances into the Noria heartland by the Kremilla and Panalis alliance time and time again.

Holy Kingdom of Eprion: The religious center for the primary religion of Noria, and a medium sized country occupying the South Eastern edge of the continent, it was once a great power that had a dominating influence over continental politics, until the many smaller kingdoms started consolidating, and kings didn't want some other person challenging their authorities anymore. The only country on Noria in this era to have a unification of church and state, its military and economic might aren't actually that great, but they repeatedly claim that their cultural heritage is what makes them the only possible true leader of mankind.

The continent has been at relative peace for the last few decades, with only small skirmishes occurring occasionally due to power consolidation and power gridlock. However, that is about to change.

So, you're asking right now, what does all this history have to do with the game?

Well, the player characters are all employees of Rimeria Heavy Industries, Panalis branch, this world's first true multinational corporation. They embody the epitome of technological innovation, industrialization, and republican ideals, and as a result the players have access to the most advanced equipment from the very start. RHIndustries are equal opportunity employers, as they disregard national origin, and as a supporter of the latest movements in women's suffrage, employ women too. Their motto "you have a skill? we have a job," means that besides manufacturing, they are also in many other fields, giving player characters (some) freedom to design themselves.

Everyone in the player party is working in RHI's industrial complex in the city of Lauden au Ris, largest port city of Panalis, when a surprise naval assault by Cadelon starts the next Great War... The question is, what can a small party of people even do in a war? Thats up to the players to decide.

Yes, this is a war RPG, but there will be plenty of opportunities to dodge combat if you wish, although why would you want to do that?

Yep, that's why the Philippines has one of the world's mightiest navies, with their 100-strong fleet of 80+ patrol boats.

Anyway, I'd like to announce my participation in this children's farce. I will be playing as a spacefaring five headed rainbow dragon cyborg with perfect acceleration and antimatter breath weaponry.

Why of course my son, with a little nerfing, any character idea can work.

Well that brings us to the character creation rules... there are none (jk).

I'mma just take a page from Wayne's book, literally.

Character creation in 3.5 easy steps:
Make lore
Pick swag and 2.5 pick spells/abilities
pick skills

For the lore/backstory you can write as much or as little as you want, just make sure there's a physical description and maybe some clue as to why your character has the swag, abilities, and skillz they do.
One common element I'm going to force on you: Your characters are all working for Rimeria Heavy Industries for some reason or another, like the real world reasons for finding a job can be very numerous and diverse.

Abilities and Equipment:
You can start with whatever mundane adventuring supplies and small items you want. If you're not sure what to get, hit up the PRD and any other splats you know for ideas. You'll start in an inhabited area, so you don't have to go overboard on rations or whatever. If you feel like a true socialist you can start with nothing for all I care. My primary concern is your "big" (important) abilities and items.

Big stuff includes:

Weapons
Armor
*unless you feel extremely strongly about the color of your guns almost everyone will receive standard issue so don't waste your time making special mundane weapons that you do not have enough hands to hold with

Enchanted Weapons and Armor
Other Magical Swag (Artifacts)
Companions, Pets, Steeds

Spells magic is fairly mundane in this world, if that isn't an oxymoron. Some spells pretty much everyone knows, such as most of the useful ones. If you want to do something thats super duper special then we gotta talk.
Extraordinary abilities

Try not to have a lot of these unless your character's theme justifies it. Here are a couple of really bad examples I made up for the lulz.
"I am knife spam gril so I have a hundred knives"
"I am the king of heroes so I have enough swords"
"I am a Garen/Mogul Khan expy so I have spin attack"
"I am the puppet master, that's why I get a squad of living mannequins"
If you say something like "I'm armor man so I have 3 suits of plate armor" I'll cringe but I might still accept it. Don't be afraid to go bananas with this, because the worst thing I can say is "no". Actually that's far from the worst thing I could say but whatever.

Skillz
Pick from 1 to 5 skills from the list that your character is good at, and maybe one or two things that they're really good at. Use the phrases "good at" and "really good at" on your sheet to denote which is which, because there are totally no numerical bonuses involved. None whatsoever.
Everyone is assumed to have the "common"/pleb language so don't worry about that. Stuff like Disguise, sleight of hand and ventriloquism can be represented through abilities. I think. Speak out if you disagree so I can smite you. Just kidding.

Skills List: Parentheses indicate separate subgroups of a category.
Weapon Training (Polearms, blades, daggers/knives, Axes, Blunt/Mace, Bows, Firearms, Siege, Shields, Throwing, Improvised etc.)
Armor Training (Mail, Plate, Exotic)
Knowledge (flora, fauna, geography, chemicals, history, religion/occult, local area, engineering, magic, mathematics, nobility, etc.)
Athletics (Swimming, Climbing, Balancing, etc.)
Social Perception
Stealth

Language (Draconian, Goblinoid, Troll, Fish, etc.)
A friendly reminder about the sentient races present in this world, for the standard humanoid fantasy races there is maybe one other, player popularity poll, dragons exist, and so do  trolls. Make what about it that you wish.

Riding/Pilot Training (Horses, dogs, bears, ostriches, etc.)
First Aid
Profession (Doctor, Craftsman, Singer/Musician)
Survival - Climate dependent (Desert, Tundra, Tropical forest)

Everyone in this world is at least a little bit magical, pick how glittery you want to be!
Magic Potential (Little, Low, Average, High, Outstanding, Extraordinary)

If you want to do a certain character build/theme but the list doesn't have skills that support it, just reply to this thread with your suggestions.
You don't even need to post, just do whatever, I'll tell you if its bad or too broad.
