@Dave: I wrote the answer with the exclusive Or in mind. Sorry, I should have been more specific. My answer works if you assume that the Sultan cannot choose a paradoxical solution, and I assumed that because Felix said that the reason the Sultan doesn't kill me outright is because he's concerned about his reputation being tarnished.

the Sultan is furious and wants him to be executed but cannot do so fearing his reputation will be lost, so he makes the young man an offer.

The idea is that the Sultan would have to lose his reputation if he killed me while my statement was still true, which would be just as bad as killing me from the get-go.

No, the idea is that if he just kills you off the bat will make him lose reputation, but if you die in a challenge that is a different story.

MarthMarthy wrote:My answer works if you assume that the Sultan cannot choose a paradoxical solution
There is no paradox, however. Unless you are immortal. Consider this possible situation:
The sultan lets you marry his daughter.
Now examine the two clauses of your exclusive or statement.
Will you marry the sultan's daughter? yes
Will you die? yes
Because both conditions are satisfied, your statement is thus false.
We have now established that there exists a possible situation where your statement is false.
Because there is a possible situation where it is false, you will die. I believe it is that simple.

I noted earlier that you can "go one step further". I realize now that this is false. There is no paradox to be found. You cannot say "but then my statement would be true!" It does not matter that your statment would be made true by killing you. The thing that matters is that there exists the possibility that you will both marry his daughter and die. This alone gives the sultan the justification he needs to kill you.

MarthMarthy wrote:The idea is that the Sultan would have to lose his reputation if he killed me while my statement was still true, which would be just as bad as killing me from the get-go.
But your statement is possibly false. The sultan would look like a liar if he didn't kill you. I'm sure he would oblige.
You are also misreading the death clause. The death clause doesn't say "I won't kill you if your statement is true", it says "I will kill you if there is a possibility of your statement being false."

It is all in the wording of the problem and the answer, and not semantic about definitions, merely that just because you will be killed, does not mean that you won't be killed.

And I don't think felix noticed that loophole, and regardless of his claim, the wording in the puzzle that has been posted is already there. The puzzle in itself is/should be static.

Though yes, maybe with some wording changes and some restructuring of the clauses, your answer would be plausible.

Alright, heres one:

The Sadistic Executioner
-------------------------------

Your an executioner who has been tasked to dispose of 10 prisoners. Their arms and legs are shackled so they cannot escape or fight back, but you can order them to move around in a small circular area. The dictator of [Whatever] has ordered you to kill them in the fastest way possible for his enjoyment, and he has given you two .44 magnum bullets and a Glock. When shot these bullets can kill up to four prisoners lined up consecutively before losing the velocity enough to exit the human body.

You are now alone with the prisoners in the execution area. How do you line them up in order to kill them the fastest?

My suggestion is as such, but I don't know if it would work 100%, line up all 10 and shoot one of the bullets such that it deeply grazes (like 1/2 inch I guess) their jugular vein, they can then all bleed to death. And I think death from bleeding jugular is like 5 or 6 seconds, or that might be how long it takes before they pass out.

Bludgen two of them to death with the butt of the gun then order the 8 other prisoners to lay on top of eichother in two stacks of four then shoot the top of each stack once in the head.

AFAIK, there's no Glock that can shoot .44 magnum bullets. Doesn't that throw a damper in things?

Dave gave some clues? So I have a rather twisted solution: there is no rule that says you can't fire a bullet more than once, and that you absolutely must use the glock, so I take an siesta point defense bow and fire the same bullet three times, lining them up in 2 groups of 4 and 1 group of 2.

Hempel's Raven. You can't prove by example, and in some cases verifying the contrapositive does NOT verify the original statement.

No, your wrong, Dave was right you can't fire the bullets with the Glock.

You order them in a circle around you and beat them to death.

ok eff it wayy faster to go do some adam apple punch, or stab through their eyes with fingers, it takes quite a bit to beat someone to death, there is no reason for them to be in an generic order for that solution.

oh thats right, I could line them in a circle, and then use a Sister's Cavalry grade Wire guided piercing round to sew all their hearts in one shot. much faster and elegant than beating them. sorry michael you have to explicitly state limitations, that's how I set up this topic to be.

Anyways here is a puzzle for you, should be fairly simple to get if you think about it

A bear walks south a kilometer, west a kilometer, then north a kilometer, the bear ends up at the same place it started, what color was the bear?

A scientist is experimenting with bacteria that are one micron in diameter and that reproduce by dividing every minute into two bacteria. At 12:00 PM, she puts a single organism in a container. At precisely 1:00 PM, the container is full.

At what time was the container half full?

heres another one, takes some info to realize

Fiji (in Melanesia) and Samoa (in Polynesia) are two islands in the South Pacific Ocean. Fiji is about 970 kilometers (600 miles) west of Samoa. A small airplane can fly this distance in two hours.
When will you arrive in Fiji if you leave Samoa on a small airplane on Tuesday night at 11:30 PM?
