If you haven't heard of it already, Mother of Learning is one of the best native-english original fictions I've ever come across. You can find it here

Sleep I'm still reeling from felix's little hogwarts train piece, the beginning of this reminds me too much of it. And it's not done yet?

I've read a chapter and a half now, and I get a very animesque vibe with the brooding chaste schoolboy being constantly accosted by overly excited nubile girls.

Oh yeah, I just remembered why I'm tired of "school of magic" stories, they always have to cram in a ton of exposition about the world's magic system, and more often than not its the same old shit with immutable spell modules, mana/energy like a JRPG, family bloodlines. This fic doesn't bring anything new or original to the table, nor does it put much of a spin on the existing magic tropes it uses.

Lol, keep going bruh. So quick to judge. It feels like you are approaching this assuming it will be bad in the first place.

The degree of exposition in MoL is significantly more minimal than that of other stories. The story is character development and plot focused. The magic system it uses isn't really that important. However, later on, you get a better understanding of its magic system which I find fairly interesting. It noticeably picks up after the first loop which kind of serves as an exposition, but the details of the first loop are quite important for background/development.

Also, the story doesn't really focus on romance very much.

The introduction and first couple chapters just left a bad taste in my mental palate with all the cliches. I've gotten to the "good part"(chapter 5 and so forth) now and my interest is formally piqued. I still think it's alright if a story takes a while to get to the good part, but the beginning of MoL leads one to believe that it's going to be about high school teenager shenanigans in which I am thoroughly disinterested.

I criticize magic systems because I'm a huge functional magic buff. I read Sci-Fi, Brandon Sanderson, and RPG sourcebooks so I've developed fairly exacting standards and criteria. Barring that, what bothers me is the plain generic-ness of the magic. Like the 'levitate object' spell and 'ignite'. They even have quotation marks around them! I don't think it makes sense that people in universe would not have come up with official names for spells and constructs and such, especially since someone probably created them in the past.

It appears that the author was hinting at the existence of cranium rats from the very beginning.

S/He's played Planescape.

I withdraw all my critical remarks. This is some good stuff.
